BASHKA PAEFF - ORIGINAL MAQUETTE STATUE For LEXINGTON MEMORIAL

BASHKA PAEFF (1893-1979) - was a Russian born immigrant artist who studied under Bela Pratt at the Boston School of the Museum of Fine Arts beginning in 1914. She is best known for the controversy surrounding the Maine Sailors and Soldiers Memorial finally installed in 1926. Paeff enjoyed creating sculptures for many commissions during her lifetime.

This is the original plaster maquette (model) for the, Memorial to the Lexington Minute Men of 1775, which was installed next to Munroe Tavern just off Lexington Green in 1948. It includes the inscription, "THESE MEN GAVE EVERYTHING DEAR IN LIFE, YEA AND LIFE ITSELF IN SUPPORT OF THE COMMON CAUSE". The piece has had professional restoration including reattachment of the left corner of the bottom step and chip repair to the edges of the steps and along the base part of the statue's back side. The base is 19.75" x 7.5" in size and the overall height of the piece is 11.75".
