J. ALLEN ST. JOHN (1875 - 1957) studied in Paris in his youth, and soon entered the field of commercial magazine illustration and cover work, including a long association with the publisher A.C. McClurg & Co. He is considered the ultimate Tarzan artist due to his breathtaking series of covers and interior illustrations for the works of Edgar Rice Burroughs. He was a teacher at the Chicago Art Institute from 1917-1935 and with the American Academy of Art from 1935 until his death.
This is the original cover art for the magazine Mystic #1, published in 1953. The image area is approximately 16" x 20" and it is tastefully framed to an overall size of 20" x 24". Signed in full in the upper left corner, this piece is in excellent condition.
