SIMON BISLEY (b. 1962) has been assaulting fans with his larger than life art since debuting on the ABC Warriors and Slaine storylines for 2000 AD magazine in 1988 and 1989 respectively. His work on Lobo and Batman vs Judge Dredd catapulted him to worldwide fame. In 2004, Heavy Metal published a critically acclaimed collection of Bisley's religious drawings and paintings entitled Illustrations From the Bible: A Work in Progress. The story of Bisley's interest in religious art begins a few years earlier when Alex Acevado, of Alexander Gallery, challenged him to put his considerable skill to work illustrating religious stories. Bisley was so inspired by the challenge that he produced a large body of religious themed images, as well as several Roman and Medieval art pieces. Fortunately, Kevin Eastman felt that the drawings deserved to be seen by the public at large and so had a large selection of them published by Heavy Metal Magazine in Illustrations From the Bible: A Work in Progress. This oil painting, circa 2000, was produced for a series of images based on scriptures from the Holy Bible. It features an image of the crucifixion of Jesus, the Christ. Bisley must certainly have been influenced by Matthias Grunewald's Crucifixion panel for the Isenheim Altarpiece. It has an image area of approximately 22.5" x 27" and is in a hand-carved frame with an overall size of 25.75" x 30.25". This piece is in excellent condition. |
